PHOTOGRAPHER AI IWANE

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Tokyo, Japan ; based in Tokyo, Fukushima and Hawaii. Ai Iwane is a photographer who has drawn inspiration from observing and documenting niche communities around the world. Japanese immigrant communities in Hawaii had become her subject matter for over a decade, focusing on Bon Dance, an annual Japanese Buddhist festival honoring the dead and welcoming the ancestral spirits back to their homes once a year.

In 2011, she realized that one of the most well-known song for Bon Dance in Hawaii called Fukushima Ondo, was brought by immigrants over a century ago, from the area now where 54,000 people had to evacuate due to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant accident. Ever since then, she continues working diverse trajectory projects between Fukushima and Hawaii, through the connection of immigrants.

Iwane started her career as a photographer in 1996. Some of her many noteworthy projects include: Muntinlupa Prison in the Philippines (2010), Nikulin Circus in Russia (2011), and Sanxia, Taipei Veterans Home in Taiwan (2012).
