PHOTOGRAPHER AI IWANE

Ai Iwane, from Tokyo, Japan, is a photographer who studied in the United States at Petrolia High School (1991), an alternative school located in Northern California, where she was encouraged to learn self-sufficiency and practice an eco-conscious lifestyle. She began her career as a photographer in 1996. While focusing on assignments for magazines and various music-related work, she has drawn inspiration from observing and documenting niche communities around the world, including the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa, Philippines (2010), the Nikulin Circus in Moscow, Russia (2011), and the Taipei Veterans Home in Sanxia, Taiwan (2012). In 2006 she shifted the focus of her attention to the culture of Japanese people in Hawaii, and as she has been partly based in Miharu-machi, Fukushima since 2013, her work in recent years is mainly themed on the connection between Hawaii and Fukushima as embodied by immigrants.

In 2018 She has published her first photo book entitled “KIPUKA”, published by Seigensha Art Publishing, Inc.
“KIPUKA” and the show “FUKUSHIMA ONDO” (Kanzan Gallery, 2018) recieved the 44th Ihei Kimura Photography Award (2019).
